Not having a CDL doesn't mean you're exempt from logs. Weight and distance decide.

Weight decides

  • 10,001 lbs or more (GVWR or GCWR) in interstate commerce: Hours of Service rules apply
  • 26,001 lbs or more generally needs a CDL
  • A non-CDL truck can still need logs and an ELD

Short-haul options

Drivers within the short-haul limits can use time records instead of logs. Outside those limits more than 8 days in any 30-day period, an ELD is required unless another exception fits.
