Most box trucks are over 10,000 lbs GVWR, which puts them under FMCSA Hours of Service rules in interstate commerce.

The weight thresholds

  • 10,001 lbs or more GVWR in interstate commerce: Hours of Service rules apply, along with the ELD rule unless an exception fits
  • 26,001 lbs or more: a CDL is generally required
  • Many 26-foot box trucks are rated at 26,000 lbs, so a CDL isn't needed, but logs still are

Short-haul options

Drivers who stay within the short-haul exception's radius and time limits can use time records instead of an ELD. If you run outside it more than 8 days in any 30-day period, you need an ELD.

Why brokers ask for ELD tracking

Even when the law doesn't require an ELD for your vehicle, many brokers and load platforms ask carriers to share location through an ELD before they'll tender a load. It lets them track the load without check-calls and helps prove you're a real, active carrier.

LOGWAY works with Highway and Trucker Tools, so you can share your ELD tracking with brokers who use those platforms.
