Quick answer: ELD stands for Electronic Logging Device. It's a small device that plugs into a truck's engine port and automatically records driving time for Hours of Service (HOS) rules, replacing paper log books.

What does ELD stand for?

ELD means Electronic Logging Device. In trucking, the term usually means the whole system: the device in the truck, the driver app on a phone or tablet, and the back-office portal.

How an ELD works

  • The device connects to the engine (diagnostic port) and records engine hours, miles, location and driving status.
  • The driver app shows duty status: Off Duty, Sleeper Berth, Driving, On Duty.
  • During a roadside inspection the driver shows or transfers the ELD logs to the officer.
  • Fleet owners review logs, violations and IFTA miles in a web portal.

Who needs an ELD

Under FMCSA rules, most drivers who must keep Records of Duty Status need an ELD. Separately, many brokers and load boards now ask for ELD tracking before they give a load, even for vans and small trucks that aren't legally required to have one.

Common ELD exemptions

  • Drivers using the short-haul exemption (no log needed).
  • Drivers who keep paper logs no more than 8 days in any 30-day period.
  • Driveaway-towaway operations.
  • Vehicles with engines older than model year 2000.
  • Always confirm your situation on FMCSA's website.

ELD log book vs paper logs

Paper logs are filled in by hand and are easier to get wrong. ELD logs record driving automatically, which cuts form-and-manner violations and makes IFTA mileage simpler.

How much does an ELD cost?

  • LOGWAY: $15/driver/month + $150 hardware, 14-day free trial.
  • Device: PT-30 or IOSix, $150 one-time per truck, free same-day shipping, cable included if needed.
